Exterior Home Lighting

Choosing The Best Exterior Home Lighting

Unless you live in a high rise apartment building, you may have to put some thought into exterior home lighting. If you live in a gated community or spread out complex, some of the lighting may be taken care of for you, but that is not always the case. Each place and home is different. You want to have your property safe, but you also want to use the right lighting to show off the beauty of your land. Throwing up lights in any old place is not always the best idea. Beyond your typical porch light, you may need more for your home.

When it comes to aesthetics, your exterior home lighting is going to be up to you. Some like to line the outdoor walk ways with lights so that people can see where they are walking, but they also do this as a decorative touch. When you do this on your property, go with small lights that have a rather dull glow. You don’t want anything that is too bright or it can hurt the eyes and annoy the neighbors. You need just enough to see and that is it. You can go with busy colors, but really think hard about that as well. White or yellow tends to work best.

When it comes to exterior home lighting for safety reasons, you don’t want to have to light up your entire property at night, especially if you have a large house or a big lawn. That is a waste of money and will annoy anyone that lives within a mile of you. Instead, you should find motion detector lights that will only turn on when movement is detected. It should not be touchy enough to go off if a mouse scurries by, but should pick up anything that might be human. They will come on when needed, and shut off after a time if no more motion is detected. These are great as they scare people off who should not be lurking around the outside of your home.

When you buy a new home, or want to upgrade the existing exterior home lighting on your current home, the smart thing to do is to go to a home improvement store just to see what they have. You can also talk with someone to see about recommendations and how to gauge what you need. If you have an existing home security system, you can call your company and ask them what they recommend. You may even get a break on your homeowners insurance if you add some exterior home lighting for safety and security reasons.
